Although Build-up for Hampton Court Palace Flower officially starts on June 11th, the last weekend before show opens is when all the magic takes place. Walking through the Floral Marquee this morning, there were a few plants stacked in Danish trolleys, but by lunch time there was a profusion of blooms and the smell, oh the smell, of lilies was intoxicating.
And in the Plant Heritage marquee a similar pattern was being followed. The central feature is really taking shape with the five continents epitomised by their floral contribution to our gardens: plants are groomed to remove dead or damaged material by Michele, a regular volunteer at the show.
The labelling team was at full strength; Helen on the Brother machine, Sally and Sandra collating names and checking them in the Plant Finder.
And there’s always something that needs painting.
Or a wall that needs moving. But that’s another story, for tomorrow. And if it all gets too much – chill.
