Steve Griffith, the Curator of Abbotsbury Sub Tropical Gardens in Dorset, kindly gave Joanna a full guided tour of the gardens recently.
The gardens were established in 1765 by the first countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for the nearby Castle!
It houses the National Plant Collection of Hoheria (a specimen of which will be included in the central feature of the Plant Heritage marquee at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show) and Steve is also interested in holding a second collection … Gunnera. It’s like visiting the gardens of St Lucia for the day – but cheaper! Quite stunning.
