As I said in a post last September, there is a long show season for our Collection Holders and Steve Hickman’s calendar for 2012 proved this to me when I visited him earlier this month. On Sunday I met up with four of our CHs exhibiting at RHS Wisley’s new venture – Grow your Own and Plant Fair.
Brilliant sunshine brought in the crowds and the three plant marquees were very busy. It was great to see Steve and Elaine Hickman of Hoyland Plant Centre with their Agapanthus and Tulbaghia; Vicky and Richard Fox of Plantagogo with their Heuchera, x Heucherella and newly awarded Tiarella collections; Chris and Lorraine Burchall of Tale Valley Nursery with their Rhodohypoxis and x Rhodoxis nestled in an impressive display of Alpines; and John Millington (Hillview Hardy Plants), NC of Acanthus with some spring colour.
Next weekend March 31st/April 1st ;
The Birchalls are going their separate ways with Lorraine joining the Hickmans at Boconnoc for the 100th Cornish flower show, while Chris stays closer to home at an AGS show in Exeter.
The Foxes will be holding their Open Weekend at Jubilee Cottage Nursery (homemade cakes on offer), an opportunity to see a working nursery and buy some of their vast range of plants.
Then over the next few weeks paths will cross at RHS Westminter Halls, Cardiff and Malvern and the Harrogate Flower Show, before some of them meet up again at RHS Chelsea, NEC and then in July exhibit at Hampton Court. It’s a gruelling schedule, but they love their plants and are energised by sharing their knowledge with the public.
