Salopian Supper

Recently Genevieve Melbourne Webb, our Executive Officer, made the trip to Shrewsbury in order to attend the Shropshire Group AGM.  She was welcomed by Margaret Owen MBE, Vice President, and Elizabeth Bacon, Chairman.  The AGM itself is held in the magnificent Council Chamber of the Shirehall in Shrewsbury.

The Shropshire Group have had a highly successful year – they are one of the ten largest groups with 147 members.  During the year their President Mr Heber-Percy hosted a small “supper” for members and their friends from which 19 new members were recruited.  The Group’s “Evening with Chris Beardshaw” in February was a great fundraiser as it was a sell out, along with Pat Edward’s Hamamelis Open Day in the spring.

This year the Group won numerous awards at the Shrewsbury Show with a Large Gold Medal, Best in Show, Best Water Feature and Best Display of Hardy Plants for their garden feature.  Nancy Estry, who designs the feature, takes pride in designing a “real” garden that one can believe in.

The Group fully engages with its 18 collection holders who hold 27 collections between them. On behalf of Ingrid, Collections Coordinator who was in Mexico, John Millington provided a very detailed report on the activities of the holders.

The Group also has an extensive propagation programme and there were over 600 plants located at Lloyd Kenyon’s estate in Whitchurch, waiting for a day in spring when the volunteers will meet up to prepare plants for the coming plant fairs.

After the short meeting, members all sit together and share a supper in the main foyer of the Shirehall.

Thank you to Iain Wright for the use of his photos.
