Friends day

Friends and Life Members of Plant Heritage met with Joanna Jones and me, Gillian, at Newby Hall last week.  We were the guests of Richard, son of our late President Robin Compton and enjoyed a guided walk around the beautiful gardens, lunch and a fascinating tour of Newby Hall itself.  Despite the forecast and the rain elsewhere in the country the sun shone on our venture and we were able to see the garden  and house looking magnificent.

We appreciate the support of our Friends and Life Members and are very grateful to the Compton family for their hospitality and the opportunity to see their family home and garden.  I will certainly be visiting again on one of my trips up North.

Newby Hall and herbaceous borders

The National Plant Collection of Cornus was started by Robin Compton in 1990, but the oldest example goes back to 1937.  There are over 100 specimens with 30 species represented by 76 different hybrids and forms.  Our timing was perfect and the Collection was looking splendid.  I will leave the photographs to do them justice.
